Verdence Capital Advisors Welcomes Billy McMullen as Director, Private Wealth Advisor

Former NCAA and NFL athlete brings more than a decade of experience advising, mentoring and advocating for student and professional athletes, with a particular emphasis on teaching mental health and self-awareness.

Baltimore, MD – December 16, 2021 – Verdence Capital Advisors (“Verdence”), a nationally-recognized private wealth advisory and multi-family office firm, today announced that Billy McMullen has joined the firm as Director, Private Wealth Advisor, Verdence/PRO.

Mr. McMullen is a former collegiate All-American and NFL athlete who has spent the past decade working with and for student and professional athletes, with a particular emphasis on helping these high-achieving and highly competitive individuals develop essential mental health and self-awareness tools needed to navigate their own personal journeys.

With Verdence, Mr. McMullen will focus primarily on the Verdence/PRO arm of the firm, which provides bespoke wealth planning, investment and advisory services to professional athletes and entertainers.

“Financial health is often a carbon copy of mental health, but athletes and entertainers, with the dramatically accelerated pace at which their careers unfold, face a very different set of challenges than most. Maximizing mental health and building a strong base of self-awareness are key to helping these professionals plan for both the short- and the long-term,” said Mr. McMullen. “I could not be more excited to be joining Verdence, where mentorship, counsel and unbiased advice are designed to meet all the needs of our clients, not just the ones that show up on an account statement.”

Mr. McMullen will work closely with the Verdence/PRO leadership team, including Verdence CEO Leo Kelly, Partner Rich Rosa and Director Noel LaMontagne, himself a former NCAA and NFL player, in managing a variety of client needs, setting and implementing business strategy, and in building robust new mentorship and educational platforms and initiatives, particularly those geared toward younger athletes.

“With the advent of new Name, Image and Likeness rules, college athletes, and even some high school athletes, are now able to profit from their efforts earlier than had previously been possible. The opportunities, and the pitfalls, are significant,” added Mr. McMullen.

“Here again I could not agree more with my Verdence colleagues, who have set education, empowerment and transparency as the three core pillars of the firm,” he added. “It cannot just be about helping these young athletes amass assets; a true partner helps them understand their goals and the power of their platform, and guides them in building the self-awareness skills needed to navigate a rapidly changing sports business world.”

“Anyone who spends just a small amount of time with Billy will come away inspired,” said Leo Kelly. “He is passionate about being both a mentor and an advocate for clients, and Billy is the ideal mentor, role model and friend for athletes. His positive attitude and desire to raise people up will be of greater value than any security we can put in a portfolio.”
